(TheFreedomFlag.Com)- Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday that he can’t understand why every state in the nation hasn’t issued stay-at-home orders for their residents.
Speaking at a CNN town hall on Thursday, Fauci — the top infectious disease expert in the country and a central face during the coronavirus pandemic — said every governor who hasn’t issued such an order yet “really should” reconsider doing so. On Thursday, the number of cases of people with coronavirus in the U.S. soared pass 236,000.
During the town hall, Fauci said:
“You know, the tension between federally mandated versus states’ rights to do what they want is something I don’t want to get into. But if you look at what’s going on in this country, I just don’t understand why we’re not doing that.”
President Donald Trump has consistently stressed allowing states to have flexibility and has stayed away from issuing a national stay-at-home order thus far. He referred to this at his press briefing Wednesday, saying:
“You have to look — you have to give a little flexibility. If you have a state in the Midwest, or if Alaska, for example, doesn’t have a problem, it’s awfully tough to say, ‘close it down.’ We have to have a little bit of flexibility.”
So far, 30 states plus the District of Columbia have put stay-at-home orders in place. And some of those governors are urging others who don’t have these orders to strongly consider doing so. One of those is California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who said:
“Our message is this: ‘What are you waiting for?’ What more evidence do you need? If you think it’s not going to happen to you, there are many proof points all across this country; for that matter, around the rest of the world.”
Health experts have consistently said that social distancing will be one of the most effective ways of combatting the spread of coronavirus. And since many people have had trouble doing it on their own, states began to issue stay-at-home orders to force them to do so.
On Friday morning, Fauci said social distancing measures are working to stop the spread, even as the situation in the United States is going to “get worse, much worse, before it gets better.” He continued:
“There’s no doubt in my mind or anyone who knows anything about this, that the mitigation activities, the physical separation that we’re doing clearly is having a positive impact. You don’t see it dramatically yet, because there’s the dynamic, with the virus doing what the virus wants to do, and we’re trying to suppress it with mitigation.
“[Social distancing] is the answer, and quite frankly, that is the only tool that we really have that we know is effective.”
With the economy in shambles, some states that haven’t had an outbreak of the coronavirus continue to hold out on restricting their residents with stay-at-home orders. But as Fauci says, that could be a move that only worsens the problem in the long run.
